Several years ago Raphael Marketing searched and compiled what we believe is arguably the definitive list of the best press advertising headlines ever written. The advertisements that ran under these headlines sold hundreds of millions of dollars worth of products for the advertisers, and many of them continued to be used – unaltered – for close to three decades.

Although some of these headlines are a little dated now, their pulling power is undeniable. A headline is generally the single most important part of an advertisement. If your headline does not grab a readers attention, its unlikely they will ever get to read your copy. After all, how many advertisements do you ignore every day because they failed to “grab” you? Probably hundreds! Whenever we have to prepare advertisements for our clients and were at a loss for a good “grab”, we review this list to refresh our thinking and jog our minds. We have found it incredibly useful, and we hope you do too.

Toronto boat cruises offer some of the amazing parties and get-togethers that you can imagine. The themes of each of the public parties are varied, but with each type you are sure to have excellent food, top notch entertainment, an attentive crew and the opportunity to have more fun than your would have thought possible.
Nearly all of the Toronto cruise lines offer both public and private party booking options to meet the needs of any potential cruise go-er. Private parties can comprise corporate events, weddings or special occasions and the public parties are open to anyone who’d like to make a reservation and can be either romantic dinner type outings or big, bold holiday extravaganzas.
How to Find the Cruise for You
There is a Toronto harbor cruise for almost any occasion that you can think of – if there’s a party, you can bet that there is a public party cruise on the Toronto harbor to help celebrate it. There are cruise parties for Christmas, for Independence Day, for Halloween and for St Patrick’s Day – but some cruise lines have very limited occupancies for some of these cruises so it’s important that you find a cruise line that you think you would enjoy and to try to book your reservation early to ensure yourself a spot at the party.
There is any number of ways for you to find a public party cruise on the beautiful Toronto harbor – here are some of the best options:
The Internet
Regardless of what you are in the market for, the World Wide Web can most likely assist you in your efforts – a quick entry typed into a popular search engine will direct you to several of the cruise line’s websites. This is usually the best option for people who’ve got access to a computer because you will be able to find out a lot about the company that offers the cruise from their website. You’ll be able to find things out like: exactly what type of public cruises they offer, what the capacity for each is, what the dates and times available are, how much the party will cost you, what you need to do to book your space, etc.
By visiting the cruise lines website you’ll also be provided with visuals that can help you make your decision, you’ll be able to see photographs taken during the cruises and maybe even a short video that will put you on board of the actual ship in which the party would be taking place. You’ll also probably be able to read a multitude of customer reviews and testimonials that may provide some assistance in deciding which cruise would be the most fun and entertaining for your or your group.
Travel Agents/Travel Websites
A local travel agent may very well have brochures available for you to take that will explain in detail all of the options of public party cruises from certain Toronto cruise lines. You’d also probably be able to get info from the travel agent as to how to get a better deal, if you were traveling into Toronto, on rental cars or hotel space.
A travel website (like Expedia or Travelocity) could probably help you put together a better package deal if you were coming in from out of town, and by visiting one of these sites you may be able to see some non-partisan or unbiased reviews from people who have no affiliation with one cruise line or another.
The Phone Book
If you’re local to the Toronto area, you could simply look up the different cruise lines in your local phone book and speak to a customer service representative about what types of cruises are available. You’d also probably be able to get brochures and information sent directly to your home about the different packages that are available.
Using any or all of the options above will let you get all of the information that you need regarding booking your spot on a public party cruise on the Toronto harbor, and by trying all of the options (website, third party and direct contact) you’re more likely to ensure that you get the best possible deal on one of the best and most entertaining excursions of your life.

One of the greatest challenges about this wonderful holiday is not preparing an incredible meal, consuming an excessive amount of turkey or pie, or even in trying not to groan after the fourth plate of food … the real challenge lies in both expressing and living with gratitude every day of the year. Anne Frank, one who perhaps had the least to be grateful for, said it perfectly when she declared: “I do not think of all the misery, but of the glory that remains. Go outside into the fields, nature and the sun, go out and seek happiness in yourself and in God. Think of the beauty that again and again discharges itself within and without you and be happy.”

And yet, perhaps the real test and challenge is not even in uttering words or having thoughts of gratitude – it is living and making evident that gratitude through our actions … by helping others.

Below are listed 10 fun and meaningful Thanksgiving traditions and activity ideas for families and people everywhere:

1)Â Significance of the Holiday: Take at least a few minutes and remember what and why we are celebrating. Review the story and history of the holiday, and ensure it is a day that is much more than turkey, football, and pie.

2)Â Gratitude Table Cloth: Every year, pull out the same table cloth to use for the meal. Everyone around the table will write 3 things they are grateful for each year on the table cloth.

3) Give to the Homeless: Go down to your local homeless shelter and serve a meal to people who have so little. In addition, organize a local fund raiser at local Churches, schools, and community centers. Collect food, financial donations, clothes, toys, books, etc. – and give them as a Thanksgiving gift to local families in need.

4) Kick off the Christmas Season: As a family, set aside the night after Thanksgiving as the time to decorate the house in preparation for Christmas.  Make it a family event – put up the tree, decorate the house, turn on the Christmas music, play games as a family, and have lots of candy of course!

5)Â Turkey Bowl: What is Thanksgiving without one, right? Make it a tradition that all the guys in the family have a football game on the morning of Thanksgiving.

6) Thanksgiving for a Family in Need: Have each child donate a little money (and/or their time) and help give Thanksgiving to a family in need. Contact the local homeless shelter, Churches, orphanages, schools, etc. – and find a family that you can give a Thanksgiving meal to.

7) Express Gratitude: Around the dinner table, before the meal starts, each person will express 3 things that they are grateful for. For younger kids, place 3 pieces of corn (symbolic of early pilgrims) or 3 pieces of candy – and they can’t eat the candies until they express 3 things they are grateful for.

8) ‘Thank You’ Cards: Everyone in the family will take a few minutes sometime that day and write thank you cards to people they are grateful for. It could be: parents, friends, neighbors, teachers, relatives, etc. Another idea for parents is to put a Name Card at every spot for the Thanksgiving meal. The outside will have the name of the person, and the inside is a small note of gratitude –tell each child or guest why they love or are grateful for them.

9) Yearly Family Thanksgiving Cards: Everyone sends their yearly family updates at Christmas … so be a little different and send yours at Thanksgiving time. In connection, express your love, gratitude, and appreciate personally to the people you send cards to.

10)Â Family Day: Simply make this special holiday a family day. Eat the meal together, play games as a family, watch a movie, campout in the family room, and just spend time together.

Since 1999, I’ve written about the Goldendoodle. When I first began writing about this lovely hybrid, I admit that I didn’t know too much about the dog since the year 1999 was the first time I had ever mixed a Poodle with a Golden Retriever to deliberately create a hybrid dog. There was very little information over the internet about the mix and this is why I began writing about the Goldendoodle in the first place. Over the years, my own information has changed because it literally takes years to become an expert on a subject. I’ve made it my business to know everything I possible can about this wonderful dog.

There were no books on the Goldendoodle and to this day, there are still no books regarding this hybrid. None that are factual, that is. Many of my blogs as well as many of my articles regarding the Goldendoodle dog could literally be turned into a book………but thus far I’ve not had the time to make this happen. I have, unfortunately, seen quite a few of my articles and much of my information plastered all over the internet without giving me, the author, credit for my work and in some instances, I’ve seen my work posted word for word on many doodle websites as well as many websites that has nothing at all to do with doodle dogs. Many of these sites are “orphan” sites where there isn’t a way to contact the owner to have my work removed. So it is unfortunate when that happens.

Noticeable changes has occurred over the years, for the Goldendoodle dog since they first became available in the United States. When I created my first litter, it was in 1999. Upon advertising my first litter, I discovered I was the only breeder in the entire southern region of the United States to have Goldendoodles available for sale. There were a few sporadic breeders in the western part of the United States and barely any in the middle of the United States. For a year or two, the entire southern region of the United States was my section and we enjoyed for awhile, having this section all to ourselves. When my first litter became available, I called these dogs “curly Goldens” because frankly speaking, I didn’t know what to call them. A friend of mine and I had joked about what breed name to give them. So we came up with that! When I sold a puppy to a resident in Charlotte, NC he brought with him a printed article he’d found on the internet regarding a man in Australia who deliberately mixed a Golden Retriever and a Poodle together and called them “Goldendoodles”. The name sounded cute, so I agreed to start calling our dogs “Goldendoodles”. I never have understood where the “doodle” part came from but I agreed to go with the trend regarding the name itself.

At the time I began my first litter of Goldendoodles, I was not concerned with color, coat texture, size, shedding or allergies. I was concerned about temperament. I was also curious as to whether or not this mixture would make a fine hunting dog and serve its original practical purposes as we knew the Golden Retriever and Poodle did back in the day when breeders were creating these dogs. I spent 2 years researching the lineage of my Poodles and discovered over 400 OFA good, champion ancestors that dates back to the early 1930s. The lineage of my Golden Retrievers actually stopped in the early 1970s and I wasn’t exactly sure why. My theory is because prior to that, the Pekay Kennel owners more than likely required their dog buyers to place the purchased dogs in AKC dog shows or they didn’t give out the registrations. Many show breeders do this if the buyer fails to use the dog for showing purposes. Many show breeders also continue to own the rights to the dog, even after they sell it, and refuse to allow the dog to be bred unless they are given the rights to the litters. I’m not sure I agree with that, but it is something I’ve heard show breeders do. At any rate, when I began creating Goldendoodles, it was my concern that I’d have a hard time finding homes for this mixture. I was completely wrong. No sooner than my first ad appeared over the internet, I had 50 people calling for a litter of 7 puppies. My first litter was sold in less than three days. We had three more litters by Christmas. That year, we literally took 23 puppies to the airport at the same time and overwhelmed the employees signing them all in for their flights across the United States. Needless to say, ”Santa” made quite a few families very happy for christmas!

There were no kennel clubs in the United States at the time of our first litter, registering the “Goldendoodle” dog. I contacted Lois at our affiliated kennel club, UKCI, and began the task of getting our first litter to become the first registered Goldendoodle hybrid. It’s been awhile ago, but I think I registered my first litter as “curly goldens”…..I can’t remember if we registered them as “curly goldens” or as “golden-doodles”. I do remember that we played around for a bit with the breed name. I also remember that my recommendations to our affiliated kennel club was accepted and a few changes by the kennel club owners were made after my recommendations were accepted. We eventually went with “goldendoodles” and not “golden-doodles” or “curly goldens”. I also know that it is a fact that I was the first breeder to ever register the Goldendoodle hybrid with this kennel club and at the time this kennel club accepted my dogs for registration as a “hybrid”, there was no other kennel club in the United States registering them. Universal Kennel Club was founded in 1938. After I became very disappointed with the American Kennel Club, I sent UKCI copies of all of my dogs’ AKC registration documents, including copies of their AKC pedigrees and made UKCI the sole registrant service for my dogs. The American Kennel Club permitted a dog breeder in Georgia to register a purebred Toy Poodle litter that belonged to one of my stud dogs, to register the litter using HER male dog’s name as the father when the facts supported my stud dog as being the father. I had sold my female Toy Poodle not knowing she had been impregnated by one of my Toy Poodle stud dogs. The American Kennel Club sat back and claimed they were nothing more than a “registrant” service and could not assist me in the matter after I contacted them and filed a grievance about this issue. It was because I discovered AKC was nothing but a liar and a disgrace as a kennel club, that I removed my dogs from their “registrant service” and vowed to let people know what a fraud AKC really was and continues to be through an article. This kennel club, AKC, laughs itself all the way to the damned bank. Back some years ago, they actually had the audacity to post a derogatory blog on their own website about the Goldendoodle and the Labradoodle proclaiming these mixes to be nothing more than “designer mutts”, but guess who, in October of 2009 began registering this hybrid? If you said The American Kennel Club….YOU ARE RIGHT!

The Golden Retriever club of America also further wrote a derogatory article on their website some years ago about the Goldendoodle and Labradoodle. Back in 1999, I received numerous hateful messages via my answering machine and email from lunatic purebred Golden Retriever and Poodle fanciers over the fact I was mixing these dogs to create our Goldendoodles. Well, guess who has changed their tune and jumped on the doodle bandwagon? Hmmmm…you guess it! Purebred Golden Retriever and Poodle fanatic fanciers who originally blasted me over the internet and called my home making threats and leaving hateful messages on my answering machine and email account.

In Australia, there was a systematic plan in place by breeders, to create the “ultimate” “assistance” dog. The first litter of Goldendoodles was created in 1997. Australia actually calls Labradoodles and Goldendoodles “purebred” dogs in their kennel club. I am still not sure exactly why that is, but it is a fact. Still considered to be in its infancy, the Goldendoodle as well as the Labradoodle is not considered a purebred dog. It would take many years of back breeding, in-breeding and linebreeding for any American kennel club to consider making these hybrid dogs a “purebred”.

Think of how many years ago dog fanciers considered creating so many varieties of dog breeds and how long it took for kennel clubs around the world to recognize these mixed breed dogs as “purebreds”. And why would a breeder want to take the Goldendoodle or the Labradoodle dog on the same path the purebred dog has been walked on, in the first place? Too many purebred dogs of today have genetic health issues because breeders created a “genetic bottle-neck” for their dogs. The competition began to heat up between multiple Goldendoodle breeders around 2002-2003. Back biting, name calling and absurd postings began to swirl around the rumor mill and I personally saw much of it when I began writing about the Goldendoodle dog and posting my articles on the web. A small group of breeders began targeting not just myself but a couple of other original founders for the Goldendoodle dog, here in the United States. The original “breeder bashers” were coming from Canada. As more news and information began to appear over the internet through my articles and blogs about the Goldendoodle dog, it seemed to me that the rumors’s purpose was to lead potential customers in the direction of breeders who paid a woman in Canada to advertise their available dogs on her own website, for a hefty yearly fee. She also harbored and to this day, continues to harbor, a doodle forum on the same site. It was obvious to me why the site owner would continue to fuel the fires. It was because she was raking in the dough from advertisement fees. She was sent multiple letters to cease and desist by not just myself, but a breeder in California and a breeder from Virginia. Some years later, I noticed the breeder in Virginia had created her own doodle forum and picked up the rumor mill from where the people in Canada had left off. The internet is abound with stories of self-made doodle breeders who hopped on the rumor mill for the simple purpose of putting dollars in their own pockets and not those of their leading competition.

As I weighed in on the Goldendoodle competition, I realized that there really wasn’t any competitors out there who were a threat to myself as a breeder, if potential buyers sought breeders who had real experience; real knowledge; actual doodles of quality and wanted to not just buy a doodle from someone who had them, but also wanted to learn about them. I admit that I was very thin-skinned in the beginning and took offense at reading the fabricated rumors and derogatory nonsense that was eventually picked up by my own estranged sister in 2006 after she fell out over my not giving her a Goldendoodle dog in the manner that she felt I should have. Anyone would become sensitive over finding untruthful comments made about their dogs and their business especially when they knew who was doing it and what their purpose was for doing it. Especially when I knew none of the rumors or posted content was true.

Even in today’s economy, I help potential buyers get the most out of their Goldendoodle by offering multiple popular articles, blogs and insight on not just my own personal website, but on a wide variety of websites across the world wide web! Consumers care more today than ever about:

1. Integrity

2. Experience

3. Knowledge

4. Professionalism

5. Quality

Investing in a Goldendoodle is very similar to investing in your future. As a Goldendoodle breeder who began their doodle breeding program in 1999, I offer all of the above. My Goldendoodle World website offers tools for the buyer to use to help them understand the dog they have become interested in. There aren’t certification classes or degrees for breeders. Everything I’ve come to know regarding this hybrid, has come from doing. My knowledge comes from hands on experience; from thousands of photographs taken over the many years from not just myself but from our Goldendoodle fans and families. Many of my blogs and articles have come from my own head as well as from many unpaid hours of research. Yes. I am a “Goldendoodle Specialist”. It takes many, many years for someone to become an expert in a field they’ve dedicated themselves to and since 1999, I’ve dedicated nearly my entire website to the Goldendoodle dog.

Because temperament is one of the things that is most important to me concerning dogs, I had to ensure that the dogs incorporated into my original doodle breeding program would make the cut. Since I began breeding purebred Golden Retrievers in 1996, I already knew my Goldens were perfect candidates. My concern was the Poodle and the temperament that would come from this type of dog. I was very glad that I found someone who had terrific Poodles with superb temperaments. Had that not been so, I wouldn’t even be here writing this article or any of the others for that matter. Over the years, it was also important to me to receive buyer responses and photographs. Feedback from customers is very important. With their permission, I began scanning their letters, their cards, their photographs and their email and placing them on my website for others to enjoy. For me to sit here and pretend that we didn’t get some negative feedback would be ridiculous. Of course, as comes natural to any business owner, we did get a few negative responses……but they were so few they were not even worthy of mentioning. Since 2006, an estranged sister of mine with an internal family ax to grind has led potential dog buyers to believe we’ve had “hundreds” (as she enjoys posting over the internet) of complaints….negative reviews and so on….but that’s simply not the case nor are her comments truthful. The fact of the matter is, we’ve had many years of successful placements for our Goldendoodles and we come highly recommended by not just those who have purchased from us and whom continue to this day of enjoying their lovely dogs, but by our affiliated kennel club and strangers alike. It is possible that the increasing influx of doodle breeders, over the years, will cause sales to continue to decline, competition to increase and breeders to fight for their fair share of sales in the industry. It is possible that the Goldendoodle dog’s general overall quality can fall to the wayside as breeders witness a sort of “purging” period. The question is, will each be best served by focusing on their individual success and needs or would the Goldendoodle industry be best served by a collaborative effort of breeders making the Goldendoodle dog the best breed available on the market? I personally believe that a collaborative effort by the original founders for the Goldendoodle dog here in the United States would continue to make this hybrid the best dog it could possible be and I include myself in this very small group of breeders.

In times like these, it is expected that a few breeders in the industry will fall to the wayside. Trust me, I’ve spent the last year or two dwelling on whether I am going to stay in it for the long haul or just get out of the breeding industry altogether and focus more of my time writing. I have an equal love for both hobbies. While there is a small group of adversaries who absolutely find the idea of the Goldendoodle dog to be appalling, these adversaries are really comprised of purebred dog “naysayers” who have had a failed effort of halting the popularity of this hybrid for years. Some naysayers are more concerned about targeting specific breeders and trying to put them out of business than they are of focusing on the overall breeding industry and some of the issues this in itself has caused the canine in general.

The naysayers forget about the children who have come to love the Goldendoodle dog. They forget that many children are owning these dogs for the very first time. As they grow up with this breed, they will turn out to be the adults who go on to say, “Hey, you know what? My very first dog was a Goldendoodle and it was the best dog I ever had!!”. Those ”adults” will then more than likely turn around and purchase the same type of dog for their own children. This is what we as people who are dog lovers, generally do. It is what I, as a breeder, continue to strive for. We do not know for how long the doodle dog will last in this industry. What we do know for now is that this hybrid is extremely popular and there are many breeders who are NOT commercial breeders; they are NOT affiliated with pet stores or pet shops; they are NOT sitting back raking in the cash. I know. I am one of these breeders who are none of the things above. If the doodle breeders who began around the same time that I did with their breeding programs would focus on what is most important for the future of the Goldendoodle dog, fewer would fall to the wayside. And it’s possible that by combining this focus……the over all quality and health of such a wonderful family dog……. that this mixture will continue in the future to live up to its full potential.

For those of us original Goldendoodle founders, especially those of us who continue to forge ahead by putting our individual struggles aside to stay focused on the Goldendoodle as a whole, there is a potential to build relationships designed to last a lifetime. For myself personally, when the crisis regarding the years of fabricated rants of an estranged sister fades, I can ask myself where would I rather be? Part of a rebounding group of focused Goldendoodle breeders, or alone and starting over? I think you already know, by the tone of this article, what my answer will be. Part of a rebounding group.

There are several good and reliable travel sites on the Internet where you can find great travel deals and save big bucks on your next holidays.

However, getting the best deals is not always as easy as we think. Even though there are hundreds of travel sites out there, getting a bargain is not always simple.

Some of the well known sites, which I have personally used without any problem, are: Expedia, Travelocity, Orbitz, Cheap tickets, Ebookers and Last minute.

Still, to find a good deal within these sites is not straightforward, a digging job has to be done to find the gold, despite the easy to use and wonderful sites these brands above and other companies have.

One of the activities that should not be missed is comparing your traveling schedule among the sites of your choice, because no one has the best prices, for all routes, always. Each one has its own specials and when someone has a bargain in certain route, usually the others have not the same special price.

To do this job, there are some websites which compare among these popular travel sites for the destination of your choice and after spotting the lowest fare, you can always go back to the lowest fare site to review the conditions and make the purchase, if you wish.

Major airline sites, often have special deals which are not published through travel sites, so taking a look to the airline sites, which travel to your selected destination, could give you surprisingly good fares for your flight.

Regardless the site or sites you choose to look for your travel information keep in mind the following tips when planning your next holiday.

Book as advanced as you can. Airlines fares increase as the time for departure approaches.

Try to arrive and depart in a mid-week day. Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday.

If you have flexible dates, chances to get a bargain will increase. Sometimes, a trade show or a special event will make the city of your destination very expensive for a given week, while a couple of days later or earlier, the prices could drop sharply.

For obvious reasons, avoid holidays. It is practically impossible to find a bargain during holidays, even more, airlines increase prices during holidays.

If you are traveling during Christmas, usually the Christmas day itself is cheaper than the days before. The same applies to Thanksgiving and other crowded holidays.

Try to use several websites to research your travel information, and then you will identify the most appropriate website for your needs.

When traveling to Europe from the US, try getting to a major city like London, and then use the local cheap fare airlines to travel around Europe.

When booking a hotel, use Expedia or Travelocity to see the pictures and location of the hotel, even if you book later in other site with better price.

Use as many sites as needed to book different parts of your holidays, if you get the best price in each one of them.

After you select a flight or hotel in any travel site, get into the airline and hotel sites directly and compare prices.

Verify that the site where you are purchasing has good reputation and uses SSL encryption when you pay online with a credit card.

After you receive the confirmation code from the travel site where you made the purchase, mail directly to the hotel and/or airline and confirm that they got your reservation exactly as the one you purchased.

Following these tips will give you the lowest fares available on the Internet and will avoid you unpleasant surprises when traveling.

- Bryce’s Law

INTRODUCTION

On August 1st of last year, my “Management Visions” (MV) broadcast premiered on the Internet. MV is a free Internet broadcast (aka “Podcast”) that is updated weekly (on Mondays) and is made available in MP3, WMA, and RealPlayer file formats (the RealPlayer is accompanied by graphics). During the broadcast, I discuss subjects related to Information Resource Management IRM), review upcoming events of interest, and review e-mails from listeners. I also describe my “Pet Peeve of the Week” which represents items irritating me at the moment. This has turned into a popular part of the show and, as such, I am including them herein for those of you who missed the broadcast. Hopefully, you will be able to relate to some of these peeves. They are meant to offer some humorous insight into current topics of interest. I hope you will enjoy them. Please note that these are my own opinions and do not necessarily represent the opinions of my company or any other group.

AUGUST 8, 2005 – BOUNTY COMMERCIAL

My “Pet Peeve of the Week” is a Bounty commercial I recently heard on the radio while driving into work the other day. Now as many of you know, Bounty is Proctor & Gamble’s “Quilted Quicker Picker-Upper” paper towels, which I don’t have a problem with as such. We use Bounty in our house. However, the new radio ad described it as having “a new blue-dot quilting” that results in a “high resolution shine.” Frankly, when I heard this I burst out laughing. People in the cars next to me must have thought I had lost my mind. “High resolution shine”? I guess it seems funny to me to see something as mundane as paper towels go “high tech”. Ah, you gotta love Madison Avenue I guess.

AUGUST 15, 2005 – MICROSOFT WINDOWS

My “Pet Peeve of the Week” is Microsoft’s Windoze operating system. I recently purchased two computers for the office; one a laptop and the other a desktop, both equipped with
the latest version of Windows XP. I had to migrate a lot of data to both machines which offhand, shouldn’t be a big deal. It was. Now, I don’t consider myself a technical guru by any stretch of the imagination but rather I like to consider myself a “power user” who knows his way around a computer.

I’ve installed a lot of operating systems over the years, both beta and production versions. Now, a lot of you know me as an advocate of IBM’s old OS/2 Warp operating system which I still consider the best 32-bit operating system on the block. Nonetheless, my track record of being able to crash a Windows operating system remains intact, for I had no end of problems and found it an extremely frustrating experience. I guess I’ve been spoiled by OS/2 with its object oriented desktop, System Object Model, and preemptive multitasking. I am still at a loss as to why IBM abandoned it.

But in my mind, I can’t imagine why anyone would bother wasting their time inventing computer viruses and worms when you have something like Windoze out there. The only thing that goes uninterrupted is Microsoft’s cash-flow. And no, Virginia, there is no o.s. monopoly out there is there?

AUGUST 22, 2005 – SOFTWARE TESTING

My “Pet Peeve of the Week” Is software testing. As I mentioned in my essay, there is a simple “bottom-up” way to test and install systems. However, I am concerned about the way software vendors are testing their products these days, if at all. The industry has fallen into the nasty habit of letting the customers test the products. For example, it is not uncommon anymore for people to get “beta” releases of software products, play with it, and report back to the manufacturer on problems encountered with it. Further, major releases of software products are being shipped with the manufacturers knowing
full-well the products are “buggy.” To pacify customers, they offer free upgrades of the next release (which actually represents the final version).

This approach to software testing is offensive to me.

I used to beta-test software products for vendors, but I no longer have the time nor inclination to do the manufacturer’s work for them anymore. Further, I no longer rush out to buy the latest release of “any” software product; I have been burned too many times by the vendors. As far as I’m concerned, the software vendors really need to clean up their act when it comes to testing. If they really want us to test their products for them,
let us know where we should send the bill.

AUGUST 29, 2005 – MICROMANAGEMENT

My “Pet Peeve of the Week” Is something a little different: micromanagement. There is a general inclination in the workplace today for managers to try and control “everything”; that nothing happens without the manager’s personal stamp of approval. I have also seen this phenomenon occurring in nonprofit organizations, everything from computer societies, to homeowner associations, garden clubs, little leagues, and, Yes, even Masonic Lodges.

Micromanagement represents a Theory X style of management, which means the organization is basically led by a dictator. Now, in some situations, I can understand the need for this. But for the workplace in general as well as our volunteer organizations, I am at a loss as to why people are doing this. One nasty byproduct of micromanagement is that people become complacent and will only do what they are told and nothing more. They evolve into robots with little loyalty for the institutions they work for.

Having played football on the gridiron years ago, I learned a lot about the concept of teamwork. In any team-type of environment you have several players, but only one coach who is responsible for the game plan. However, trying to control the actions of every player on the field is not only infeasible, it can be counterproductive. I have always found it to be more effective to empower people to make decisions and hold them responsible for their actions. People will not seek responsibility and will only put forth the minimum effort if they are not given some latitude. I always liked Ronald Reagan’s comment on his management style when he said, “Surround yourself with the best people you can find, delegate authority, and don’t interfere as long as the policy you’ve decided upon is being carried out.”

In other words, ease up on the micromanagement, empower your people, give them direction, but don’t tell how to do everything in meticulous detail.

Bottom-line: Do more management and less supervision.

SEPTEMBER 5, 2005 – UNIVERSITY PROGRAMS

My “Pet Peeve of the Week” are University programs that profess to offer a systems curriculum, but in reality, concentrate on nothing more than software development. I am often asked to give overviews of “PRIDE” at universities, normally at the MBA level, and am appalled on how superficially the colleges gloss over the fundamentals of true systems work. Normally, the curriculum offers an introductory course on systems but little else. Instead, they tend to focus on programming languages, networking, and computer trends. Small wonder when I start to talk about “PRIDE”, with its engineering/manufacturing concepts, the students look at me dumbfounded. Terms like “Product Structure,” “Blueprinting,” “Bill of Materials,” MRP, and Production Control are foreign concepts to most systems students. Consequently, our universities are spitting out more software people than we really need. A lot of the customers I deal with are looking for students who can grasp business concepts, know how to interview users, know basic math in order to prepare proposals, understand work flows and work measurement, and write effectively. Frankly, they are screaming for more systems people as opposed to the software candidates churned out by the colleges.

SEPTEMBER 12, 2005 – THE DEATH OF COMMON COURTESY

My “Pet Peeve of the Week” is the death of common courtesy. The other day we had a new FedEx driver make a delivery at our office in Palm Harbor. Since I happened to be by the front door, I opened it and watched him approach. He wore a scowl on his face as if he had been having a bad day. I opened the door, greeted him warmly, shook his hand and asked how his day was going. As I signed for the delivery, the driver looked at me strangely. I asked him if there was a problem. He said, No, it was just that I was the first person that day to be friendly to him and actually ask how he was doing. He said in most companies he visits he’s pretty much taken for granted and treated rudely.

I asked if he thought this was something unique to him as an individual. He said, No, the other drivers often speak of the callousness of their clientele. Come to think of it, I have seen evidence of this elsewhere. For example, when I go to a restaurant, the waiters and waitresses are often taken aback when I kid with them and ask them about their day. Often they look at me like I might have some ulterior motive. But once they get past this, they warm up to me and we have a good working relationship.

This made me stop and think about today’s corporate work place. Have we become so jaded and insensitive as to disregard the interpersonal relationships of our employees, our customers, and our vendors? Have we become so self-centered and aloof that we no longer care how we treat other people?

You know, I learned a long time ago that you can catch a heckova lot more flies with honey than you can with vinegar. A little courtesy and hospitality can go a long way with people. For example, I learned the virtues of a firm handshake some time ago. I don’t just give them some wishy-washy handshake and look through the person. I look them squarely in the eyes, shake their hand and tell them how glad I am to see them. Something as simple as a sincere handshake can work miracles.

We must remember that we don’t conduct our business with inanimate objects, but rather with human beings. Sharpening our people skills is incredibly important to accomplish anything worthwhile in life. Simple common courtesy is a big part of this. Try it. Next time that FedEx or UPS driver comes to
your door or a waitress to your table, look up at them, greet them with a smile and ask them how they’re doing; heck, even often them a handshake. You will be pleasantly surprised with the service you’ll get in return. I’ll tell you this; we have no problems with shipments or deliveries at our office. How about yours?

SEPTEMBER 19, 2005 – THE COMPUTER PRESS

My “Pet Peeve of the Week” is the Press. No, not the general press as distorted as it may be, but rather, the computer trade press. Years ago we had numerous publications you could count on to print an unbiased view of the industry. Publications such as “Infosystems,” “Datamation,” “Computer Decisions,” and the “EDP Analyzer” were able to give balanced reporting while still generating sufficient advertising dollars to sustain
themselves. But something happened along the way in the 1990’s with the propagation of the PC in the workplace. Suddenly, new interests and allegiances were formed and the trade press basically sold its soul to upstart vendors who now command the market. This resulted in jaded reporting and, unfortunately, the credibility of the various publications have diminished. So much so that circulation of the publications are at an all time low. Even “InfoWorld” and “Computerworld” are mere shadows of themselves.

What is missing is a little integrity in the trade press. Instead of trying to invent the next fad, how about some honest reporting on what is actually going on in this industry, both right AND wrong. I’ve got news for you, not everything is as peaches and cream in this industry, regardless of what the press tells you.

SEPTEMBER 26, 2005 – WORKAROUNDS

My “Pet Peeve of the Week” Is the word “workaround” as has been commonly used in the IT field for the last ten years. I tried looking up “workaround” in both Webster’s and The New Heritage Dictionary and, of course, I couldn’t find it. As
we all know, it has come to mean finding a way around a technical problem. It doesn’t mean its a correction to a problem but rather, a way of addressing a problem. But make no mistake about it, “workarounds” ultimately represent errors or bugs in the system and we should refer to them as such. I’m amazed by programmers when they proudly proclaim they’ve found a “workaround” as opposed to admitting they have a problem and don’t know how to fix it.

An IT Department should avoid the term “workaround” as it tends to irritate end-users and causes them to lose faith in the development staff’s ability for solving their problems. A bug is a bug, I don’t care what you call it; don’t try to sugarcoat it, fix it.

As an aside, I was finally able to find “workaround” defined in one dictionary, the Redneck Dictionary. Its typically used to determine the location of employees. For example, “Hey Y’all workaround here?”

I don’t know, I guess I’m getting tired of the sloppy language in this business.

OCTOBER 3, 2005 – MICROSOFT

My “Pet Peeve of the Week” Is Microsoft, whom I refer to as the Howard Johnsons of the computer business (with apologies to HJ). We call them this because they offer products that are never state of the art, but they are not the worst either; just mediocre and very predictable.

Recently, I read that Microsoft announced its Windows Workflow Foundation (or WWF – which sounds remarkably like the World Wrestling Federation). Nonetheless, WWF is a Windows technology that will enable developers to stitch together MS Office applications and in-house developed software into workflow applications. Here again is another example of “bottom-up” system design. Instead of first determining requirements and designing the overall system architecture, they are proposing a means to assemble programs bottom-up. Vintage Microsoft. Frankly, I think they should stick to wrestling.

OCTOBER 10, 2005 – CORPORATE DRESS CODES

My “Pet Peeve of the Week” Is corporate dress codes. Back in the 1970’s it was generally expected that a man wear a suit and tie to work and women dressed well. During the 1980’s this code was relaxed and you would see “dress down” days on Fridays. By the 1990’s suits and ties had been replaced by golf shirts and slacks. But now, in 2005, we see t-shirts, blue jeans and shorts in the workplace.

Ben Stein recently wrote an interesting piece in the New York Times complaining about the slovenly appearance of corporate America which I have to agree with. I think we have gone too far. Dress codes have an impact on the corporate culture of any business. If we dress sharp, we tend to think smart. If we dress sloppy, we tend to be lazy in our work habits. Show me a workplace without a dress code and I’ll show you a pigsty that produces questionable results. I know we like to promote
rugged individualism in this country, but there is nothing wrong with a little uniformity and teamwork either.

When we started our company in the early 1970’s, our dress code was “business casual” except when we knew customers were coming into the office where we were then expected to spruce up and dress professionally. Over time, we abandoned business casual and mandated at least a shirt and tie for men and proper attire for women. This had a positive effect, particularly on our IT staff. What I found interesting though was while we, as a small business, were learning to “dress up”, corporate America began to “dress down.”

Ben Stein was right in criticizing today’s corporate dress codes. After all, who would you rather do business with, someone who looks like a bum or someone dressed for success and has their act together? I think the answer is rather obvious.

OCTOBER 17, 2005 – CELL PHONES

My “Pet Peeve of the Week” is cell phones. As you will remember, cell phones first became popular with doctors and other members of the medical community who rightly saw it as a vital link between their patients and themselves. Next came business people who needed mobility to talk with their office and clients. This included realtors, salesmen and service people. But then it landed in the hands of housewives and children under the clever ruse that it was a great way to get in touch with our loved ones in the event of an emergency. And this is when all hell broke loose. Now, it seems everyone has one, not only on their hips or in their ears, but in their cars, on their motorcycles. I’ve even seen kids talking on them while skateboarding, riding bicycles, and, Yes, even tricycles. Its now more of an annoying habit than a working tool or status symbol.

What I find amusing is how it has affected our social skills. Its now common to find people walking alone on a street or in a store seemingly talking to themselves. Maybe they are and the cell phone is nothing but a clever ruse. But what disturbs me more than anything is how people jabber away on the phone while they’re in traffic. Now you know darn well not everyone has something vital to communicate all of the time. It is now common to see 16 year old girls talking to their boyfriends and making plans for the weekend; moms chatting with their girlfriends, guys talking with their buds, and so on. We’re doing everything but paying attention to the road. Have we become so bored with our lives that we find it necessary to talk to someone just to kill time while in traffic? I guess so.

In 1967, James Coburn starred in a movie called “The President’s Analyst” which has become a cult classic. If you haven’t seen the picture, Coburn uncovers a plot by the telephone company to implant a chip into everyone’s head whereby everyone can send and receive telephone calls (I’d love to see how they would handle faxes). Nonetheless the movie is very prophetic in terms of where cell phones are heading. I’m just worried about the social implications.

Please do me one small favor though, if you find it absolutely necessary to talk to someone on the phone while you’re driving around, please pull off to the side of the road and talk to the person like a rational human being. And Yes, I am very much in favor of legislation regulating the use of cell phones.

OCTOBER 24, 2005 – BLOATWARE

My “Pet Peeve of the Week” is “Bloatware.” Ever notice when you get a new computer how fast it runs, Yet, over time it starts to slow to a crawl. This is primarily attributed to
what is called “bloatware” in the industry. Years ago, programmers were very careful in how they wrote software. The code was very tight and there was concern over efficient use of machine resources. But as disk space, memory, and processor capabilities grew, programmers became less and less concerned with machine efficiency. I remember just a few years ago I was able to install IBM’s OS/2 operating system on a PC with 50mb of disk space, and it ran just fine with plenty of room to spare on my hard drive. But the times have changed; hardware improvements and the Internet have seen to that. But the programming is getting sloppier and sloppier. If you have tried to install a word processor or a graphics package lately you know what I mean.

I can’t help feeling this is all a grand scheme to build-in obsolescence into our computers. Slowing down software means purchasing additional hardware. Understand this, a computer is considered an antique when it reaches three years old. We would probably hold onto our computers longer if we didn’t have so much bloatware running on them. But I guess that wouldn’t be good for the economy.

OCTOBER 31, 2005 – GUESTIMATE

My “Pet Peeve of the Week” is the word “Guestimate.” I have been involved in the IRM field for a long time now and it has always bugged me how people try to invent new words in an attempt to appear cute and clever. One such word is “Guestimate” which tries to imply that performing an estimate is simply a guess, to which I have to give a big DUH. Estimating is fundamentally an effort at projecting the future. Like all projections, the more facts and information available, the better the estimate will be, but rarely is it ever perfect. There is a natural human tendency to avoid making estimates because estimates are expressions of commitments, and people tend to shy away from commitments and accountability, particularly when they are not sure of the facts. Look, lets keep it simple, an estimate is an estimate and a guess is a guess, let’s not create any more 3rd grade words such as “guestimate.”

Another word that bothers me is “reiterate” and you hear it just about everywhere these days. Think about it; what does it mean? The word Iterate refers to the repetition of something. So what do we mean when we say RE-iterate? An infinite loop? The language in the IT industry is sloppy enough without us having to add new words to our vocabulary. But I guestimate I am reiterating myself.

NOVEMBER 7, 2005 – COMPLICATIONS

My “Pet Peeve of the Week” is entitled, “Why do we make things more complicated than they really are?” Over the last 30 years I have been fortunate to travel the world, visit with
many corporate customers, and hobnob with gurus in the field. One thing I’ve always found fascinating is how the IT industry tends to make things more complicated than they really are. For example, building systems and software is really not as complicated as they appear to be. Systems consist of business processes, procedures and programs. We also have inputs for collecting data, outputs for transmitting information, files for storing data, records, and data elements. Period. It has always been this way and it will always be this way. But the IT Industry seems to reinvent itself every five years or so. We now like to talk about apps, agile programming, data mining, SOA, business rules, meta data, and things that go bump in the night. The only rationale I can give for changing the vocabulary so often is that it must sell a lot of books and magazines. Either that or people use it to make themselves look smarter than they really are. The sad part is that this new vernacular is creeping into college studies and we then have to spend the next several years debriefing the kids. I don’t know, as I get older, I find the better things in life are the simple things. I guess I’m surprised that more people don’t challenge needless complexity.

NOVEMBER 14, 2005 – SNOWBIRDS

My “Pet Peeve of the Week” is entitled “Snowbirds.” November marks the beginning of the snowbird migration. This is where northerners, predominantly retirees, begin to make their annual trek down here to Florida. Sure, their money is nice for our economy but we have to contend with some God-awful drivers. There are New Yorkers in SUV’s who think they own the road, people from Ontario who believe they are always driving in a school zone, and others from the midwest who are just plain lost. It sure would be nice if we had a national driving standard. It would make it a heckova lot easier and safer down here for all of us if we did.

NOVEMBER 21, 2005 – SMOKING

My “Pet Peeve of the Week” is the Great American Smokeout sponsored by the American Cancer Society last Thursday, November 17th. As many of you know I enjoy a good cigar. I never acquired a taste for cigarettes but I definitely enjoy a good cigar when I’m going about my business. I don’t bother anyone with it. Its just something I do on my own time. Yes, I am aware of the dangers of smoking, as I am sure all smokers are. And, No, I do not consider myself a smoking advocate. Having said all this, let me just say to all the Anti-smokers out there: Will you please get off our backs! Being a smoker doesn’t mean we’re demons or some misguided fools, but we sure get characterized this way. The Anti-Smokers are making it harder and harder to find a venue for us to enjoy our pleasure, everything from airplanes and airports, to restaurants and bars, the workplace, even cars. Next, will be our homes where I definitely draw a line and tell them to mind their own business. I will continue to enjoy my cigar regardless of the browbeating I may take from the Anti-Smoking lobby. I don’t think they realize that as they become more obnoxious in their campaign, it stiffens my resolve to enjoy a good smoke.

I will also remind you of one of my more memorable Bryce’s Laws that says, “Never trust a person who doesn’t have at least one known vice (e.g., drinking, smoking, swearing).” I have always found that such a lily white person always has a dark side or something they are trying to hide. As for me, I’ll continue to enjoy my cigars and keep my vices aboveboard.

NOVEMBER 28, 2005 – MICROMANAGEMENT

My “Pet Peeve of the Week” is “Micromanagement.” Today we live in a Theory X world where managers like to dictate the specifics of any given task which is commonly referred to as “micromanagement.” Employees are told what to do and when to do it, without any interest in their input. Such an approach is basically saying to the worker, “Look, you’re not smart enough to do this right so I’m going to tell you how to do it.” Consequently, micromanagement tends to irritate and alienate people. More recently, I’ve noticed this same phenomenon occurring in nonprofit volunteer organizations, such as homeowner associations, clubs, school organizations, sports associations, and even church groups. The people that run these groups may have the best intentions, but rarely do they know how to actually manage. Sadly, some people get involved with such organizations to satisfy a petty power trip they are on. They have little regard for organization and adherence to policies and rules. Instead, they try to micromanage everything. People, particularly volunteers, have a natural aversion to micromanagement and quickly lose interest in their work.

Instead, I recommend an approach where you delegate responsibility and hold people accountable for their actions. I refer to this as managing from the “bottom-up” as opposed to
“top-down.” By treating workers like responsible adults, there is a tendency to accept responsibility and see a task through to its successful completion. As President Ronald Reagan said, “Surround yourself with the best people you can find, delegate authority, and don’t interfere as long as the policy you’ve decided upon is being carried out.”

Basically, Reagan said, “Don’t micromanage; empower your staff and get out of the way.”

DECEMBER 5, 2005 – RERUNS

My “Pet Peeve of the Week” is “Reruns.” Last week it was announced that the Rolling Stones were going to perform the half-time show for the 40th Super Bowl next February in Detroit. I found this announcement somewhat amusing in that Paul McCartney of the Beatles provided the half-time entertainment in the last Super Bowl. Its not that I have anything against these aging rockers, as I have been a big Beatles and Stones fan for the last 40 years, I’m just wondering where the new talent is or if there really is any talent to replace my generation’s music. We hear a lot about Rap, Hip-Hop, and Country, but who are the musicians who truly define this generation? Frankly, they’re not our there. Oh, I’m not suggesting the talent doesn’t exist, for I believe it does, but it is being tightly controlled by marketers who engineer every note being recorded today.

In the old days, it was not uncommon for artists to write their own music, sing their own songs, and play their own instruments. This is hardly the case any more. Instead of developing a generation of craftsmen like the Beatles and the Stones, the current wave of musicians are simply marketing “flash in the pans” that have no staying power. The Beatles and the Stones are great, but ultimately their music represents reruns which is indicative of the artistic void that has been created by the media moguls. Take Hollywood for example; How many times are we going to remake King Kong, the Pink Panther and just about every TV show from the 1960’s? Instead of computer generated graphics, how about some creative plots and well written scripts? I can’t believe we’ve run out of ideas in Hollywood, so much so that they find it necessary to reproduce old stories. Does the younger generation really lack any form of creativity? I seriously doubt it. They’re just not being allowed to express it and, instead, we have to sit through reruns. I’m becoming increasingly concerned what effect this stagnation in our culture will ultimately have on us. To me, it represents complacency and signals a decline in our ability to strive to achieve. It also represents another indication of the “micromanagement” going on in the corporate world. Consider this, if the Beatles and Stones were to emerge in today’s world, they probably wouldn’t be allowed to practice their craft.

Oh well, I guess I’ll go home, turn on the television and listen to Led Zepplin sell Cadillacs.

DECEMBER 12, 2005 – SERVICE (THE LACK THEREOF)

My “Pet Peeve of the Week” is “Service” (the lack thereof). Recently I stopped by a new cigar shop to buy some cigars. I went into their humidor and checked their inventory. There were several custom-rolled cigars made on the premises as well as the usual commercial cigars from the Dominican Republic and the Honduras. I happened to find my favorite (which is a Hoyo de Monterey, Sultan/Maduro) and took a dozen of them up to the cashier for purchase. Ahead of me in line was a gentleman also purchasing a dozen cigars all of the same kind. I noticed the cashier was painfully slow in scanning and recording each cigar. Next to her at the counter was the shop owner who was preoccupied reading a magazine. There were other customers also in the shop, all of which were of no concern to the cashier or owner.

What should have been a simple transaction for the guy in front of me took at least ten minutes. Fortunately, I was in no hurry, but I was starting to become impatient nonetheless over a simple purchase. When she finally finished the transaction, the cashier greeted me, took my cigars and began the laborious task of scanning and recording my order (again, a simple transaction turned into a lengthy task). As she processed the last cigar, I pulled out my wallet and presented her with my credit card. She looked at it and said, “Oh, I’m sorry our credit card machine is down right now, do you have cash?”

Of course, I didn’t and suddenly I realized that after waiting twenty minutes to make a simple purchase I had come to loggerheads with her over the purchase.

I said, “Is there nothing that can be done?”

“No sir, we need cash.”

Interestingly, the shop owner who had been listening to our banter simply kept flipping through his magazine.

I asked, “Can’t you take an imprint of my card and process it later when the machine is back up?”

“Oh, no sir, we can’t do that.”

“In other words, instead of trying to find a way to make this sale happen, you’re telling me that I just wasted twenty minutes of my time in your store.”

She looked at me dumbfounded and the owner turned another page in his magazine.

I told them this was the last time I would frequent their establishment and stormed out without any cigars. Frankly, I don’t think they cared one bit.

I’m sure we have all seen similar situations where there is a lack of decent service, whether it be in a retail shop, restaurant, automotive repair, in the corporate world, or wherever. People are becoming less and less sensitive to customer service. Its like they come down with a bad case of the stupids when dealing with customers.

As I was growing up, I was always taught that the customer was king; that if you took care of the customer they would return the favor with repeat business and provide sparkling references of your business to others. But evidently, the times are changing and teaching good customer service is becoming a rarity. For those of you who really don’t care about the customer, I would
remind you that everything begins with a sale and the customer should never have to wait to pay the bill. Instead of finding ways not to make a sale, here’s an idea; why not try to find ways to make it happen. But I guess that would require a little personal initiative which is something that is also sorely lacking these days.

DECEMBER 19, 2005 – HOLIDAY MADNESS

My “Pet Peeve of the Week” is entitled “Holiday Madness.” December is the month where we celebrate a lot of things:

There is so much to celebrate during December that I always felt sorry for those people who were born during this month and are typically gypped out of the parties and presents they deserve.

Comedian Lewis Black recently commented on the encroachment of Christmas on other holidays, such as Thanksgiving and Halloween, that the retailers won’t be happy until the Christmas season encompasses Labor Day and the 4th of July. Lewis has a point. It is simple economics that drives this year-end holiday frenzy and little else. You don’t really believe those people fighting in WalMart over a DVD player, digital camera, or iPod are really thinking about “peace on earth, good will towards man” do you? Hardly. The holidays bring out both the best and worst in all of us, which is a shame as this is not what they were intended for. It is supposed to be a time of reflection and renewal, not traffic jams and chaos in the shopping aisles. Ever wonder what these year-end holidays would be like if the exchange of gifts were removed from the formula? They would probably be as subdued and respectful as Veteran’s Day or Memorial Day. But this will never happen as the retailers and the media holds us in their tight grip. We’ll now spend the next 90-120 days paying everything off. I’ll just be happy when the tinsel comes down, the house is cleaned up, the relatives go home, and everything returns to normal. At least until April 16th which is Easter Sunday and the sales cycle starts all over again.

What do you do with a man who decided to begin distance running competitively at 65 years of age, then went on to set track and field records, some of which still stand, and won five gold medals in international competition?
What do you do with a man who still works tending beehives and processing honey despite his age?
What do you do with a man who at 105 years of age drives or walks-depending on the weather-from his home to the post office and then to his business office six days a week?
If you want to be able to enjoy longevity and productivity like he does, you study him! And studying Waldo McBurney of Quinter, Kansas just became easier because he has written and recorded his life story in a new audio book called, “My First 100 Years!” According to the Audio Publishers Association, McBurney holds another record-the oldest person to narrate their audio autobiography.
With wit and wisdom, he chronicles his childhood and early life, college years at Kansas State University where he earned a degree in horticulture in 1927, his working life as an entrepreneur, manager, and laborer, and the role that faith, family, exercise, and nutrition play in his positive attitude toward life. In fact. He covers 21 areas of life that need balance and attention if longevity is to be yours. But at the same time, Waldo is quick to point out that while it has worked for him, your mileage may vary. “Lifestyle is more important than genetics,” he says. “We don’t get to choose our parents, but we can choose how we live and what we eat.”
Reviews for “My First 100 Years!” are a testament to the motivating nature of McBurney:
“What a treasure! I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this wonderful story! It was like being transported back to a simpler time, where country schoolhouses, daily farm chores, and personal responsibility were the norm for the day! Waldo’s detailed picture of hard work on the family farm in the early 1900’s, and his reverence for a wise and thrifty Mother who could run circles around Martha Stewart encouraged me to count my blessings and to appreciate the modern day conveniences we so take for granted. With gentle humility, and a wonderful sense of humor, Waldo McBurney challenged me to examine my priorities and see life through his valuable filter of wisdom and life experiences. He shares a wealth of his own health and fitness information, which has motivated me to dust off my own running shoes, and think twice about what I eat. If you are a runner, know a runner, or are just interested in knowing the secrets to a long and successful life, this man’s fascinating story is a MUST HAVE! I guarantee that you will be inspired and encouraged as you listen to this story of the youngest centenarian you will EVER meet!” ~A.Ibe-Boise, Idaho
“…we don’t just read about McBurney’s life, we hear it directly from him. In slice of life segments, we’re treated to a portrait of a man who filled his life with work, faith, family and fun. A beekeeper and medal winning runner long past the time others have given up both work and sports, McBurney recounts his adventures…a mixture of autobiography, philosophy, advice on healthy living and eating. A story of encouragement, faith and hope.” ~Author’s Choice Reviews
So if you’ve been wondering what to give a recent retiree, or need a Christmas gift for anyone in that age group, Waldo McBurney’s book could help add years to their lives. Free gift-wrap and free shipping from the publisher’s Web site www.audiobookman.com from now until Christmas.

Nowadays, a lot of online businesses rely heavily on certain seasons for increased sales volume. As of this writing, the month of September for most industries indicate a significant time for sales — it’s back-to-school in the US; it’s the early start of Halloween and Christmas preparation for Christian nations; it’s the beginning of vacation booking for some travel enthusiasts. If you are an online marketer that could benefit from such events, then you might just want to invest on the trend when the demand is in full bloom, because if you’re not prepared as a seasonal marketer, you will not reap the fruits of a demanding market during this buying season. Research and well-tested ad campaign techniques are keys to handling seasonal activities in the online market. So when seasonal advertising time is approaching, you should be equipped with the knowledge of knowing the profitable keywords from related websites around a month before the season. For example, you are planning to sell gift items this coming Christmas such as jewelry, clothes, perfume and toys. You should do a research of shopping sites, such as buy.com, Amazon and ebay.com, and determine their high-paying keywords. Competitive intelligence tools such as KeywordSpy.com can be a big help in this marketing pursuit. It can gather keywords of marketers in all types of industries and allow you to get good ideas on keyword advertising. You can also check its Time Machine feature, this KeywordSpy thing lets you look at keywords other advertisers have used in the past.So based on our first example, you may look for Christmas-oriented sites in KeywordSpy Time Machine and check their November and December 2007 keywords and ad copies, then see for yourself the keyword advertising strategies which will be helpful in your own site campaign on December 2008.In short, if your business has various high points throughout the year, try to review the past promotional and marketing campaigns of your industry so you can improve your next target season. I really suggest that you give the Time Machine a shot. This is the only keyword tool feature that I have seen giving months’ worth of advertising information. Would you believe, I found out through KeywordSpy Time Machine that divorce sites such as Divorcesyourself.com boost their advertising during months of February and March? Perhaps this can be credited to the fact that the Valentines madness is in the air during these months, and divorce sites are targeting the emotional spots of “attached people”, by subtly suggesting that they should prioritize their need for divorce to be with their “true love.” So, how is that for an advertising gold mine if you are in the “divorce industry”? You can simply copy the keywords and improve the ad copies of well-performing divorce sites in certain periods and months. Whoever said that “moving forward” is the best thing to do in this world” is simply not always right especially in this case. Cause in the world of seasonal advertising, it is good to “look backwards” and review the good and bad in the past season, for you to cherry-pick and carry the good ones in the next. The theory is the same when choosing your keyword and ad copies for your targeted seasons, learn from the sites that did well in the past and enhance what they’ve got. With this, we might just believe in the saying: “It’s always good to learn from the experts.”Happy selling and have a fruitful season!

American Red Cross volunteers respond to a tornado early Saturday morning destroying homes in Johnston and Wilson County in North Carolina. The American Red Cross set up an emergency shelter immediately following the tornado at the Kenly Free Will Baptist Church. All of the families affected ended up staying with friends or relatives and several were placed into local hotels.

A series of tornadoes touched down near the towns of Meadow and Benson, just east of Route 95 in Johnston County, at about 2:30 a.m. Saturday morning. The destructive forces of the tornado moved north through Four Oaks, Smithfield, Princeton, and Kenly in Johnston County and Elm City in Wilson County. The majority of damage and destruction was caused in the small towns of Kenly where a woman was killed and Elm City where a boy was killed. Numerous homes and a business were destroyed and many more damaged. The National Weather Service conducted their assessment and review of the damage and determined that an F2 tornado caused the damage.

The local weather station and TV station issued a Doppler indicated Tornado warning, but authorities couldn’t immediately confirm that a twister had formed and was actually on the ground.

In each of the cases we heard, families reported hearing the tornado. Some of the people stated that they had heard the roar of the Tornado and it sounded like the familiar freight train coming through. Although they tried to scrambled and find refuge or a safe place in their homes, some where not as fortunate. Unfortunately, North Carolina does not have an early warning system to alert people of impending weather. Without having an early warning system, the next best warning system would be a NOAA alert radio. I have several at my home and they sounded the alert early Saturday morning.

The powerful winds ripped the roof off homes in the Meadow and Benson area. As we arrived in Kenly, we observed many homes were leveled to the ground, scattering the occupant’s belongings in every direction, while others just feet away remained essentially untouched. In Kenly where we set up our shelter, we left at first light and found to our dismay many homes that had lost roofs and many more where annihilated or condemned as uninhabitable from the early morning awakening fright. And frightful shock it was, for in North Carolina, we seldom experience tornado activities, but do sustain the destruction forces from our Atlantic hurricanes. We are just so fortunate that the storm’s wrath did not happen upon a well-populated area in any of these towns, but still, it was confirmed as being deadly.

The American Red Cross and other agencies performed Damage Assessments of the area and it was shocking to see and experience what nature was capable of doing to small rural communities. I have always thought that a home constructed of brick and mortar was more secure than a mobile home. Well, Mother Nature placed my theory as being incorrect, as it did not matter the home you lived in, if you were within the swath of destruction you sustained damage or total devastation.

Many residents sustained scattered damage throughout the county, such as wrapping wood and siding around trees. Some siding hung high from trees as if a high school prankster had decorated them with toilet paper. Downed power lines crisscrossed the roads. Barns, outbuilding and fences were completely destroyed and yard ornaments and mailboxes landed hundreds of feet from their rightful homes, as these powerful winds roared through. The winds picked up and overturned many private vehicles, scattered lawnmowers, and children’s toys.

Uprooted trees and tilting utility poles were the pattern, as Officials asked onlookers to stay away from the areas in Kenly and Elm City until utility companies properly handed the damage. The storm knocked out most of the power to customers along its path. Even thought asked to refrain from rubber necking, people are just curious in nature and the police department eventually closed off the roads while damage assessment and relief efforts where underway.

It wasn’t just the American Red Cross or local Fire Departments that responded to the disaster but many organizations came to their neighbors and friends assistance in the community. Many came to just clear the debris while others patched areas of a roof where they had pretty extensive leaks. One group stated “Right now we are trying to assess whether or not it is going to take further action and replace portions of the roof or the entire roof.”

And what about the impact this all had upon the children? I did talk with 3 little children that were playing in a driveway concrete pad that used to be where their barn once stood. They were all coloring in a coloring book and talking about the storm. One boy was coloring in a Christmas theme coloring book. I thought, as I looked over his artistic work, that he was coloring his own Christmas Tree, and I said, “What a beautiful Christmas Tree.” He looked up to me and corrected my first impression by saying, “No, that’s the tornado.” They then talked to me about the movie Twister and what it was like when they watched it. I asked if they were alright and one little girl looked up into my eyes and said” The noise was horrible. It was so loud. All I could hear was glass breaking, and things banging together. I was so scared.” I told the children that they and their family were O.K. and that we all be here to help them and if they needed to talk with us about what happened, to ask one of our volunteers anytime. I have been a volunteer for the American Red Cross for many years and I’ve never seen anything like this before…a vision that I will never forget. I pray that these children and the families of Kenly and Elm City and all of the other areas impacted from this storm never have to experience this again.

I wish to thank every organization, civic group and person that came forward to clear debris or with clothing, food and money for the victims of this horrific event. Even though each person faces their own demons, face the effects of our recession, or maybe has been laid off from work, people still came forward to help those in need. This means a lot about the character of an American and I am proud to be included in the ranks as an American that care and does something to help another American.

RAJEEV MALIK –“India’s economic reforms remain a story of incremental changes at a glacial pace.”

RAJENDRA PRASAD –“It is not altogether impossible for man to achieve happiness without the usual paraphernalia, which passes for his everyday necessities… It was by practising ’simple living and high thinking’ that Mahatma Gandhi could enjoy that happiness which a humble follower of his is unable to have even in the palatial Rashtrapati Bhavan. Let us be sure that our will to progress and rise high will materialise in the true sense only after we have realised that the source of our happiness does not lie outside us but is enshrined within our own: hearts.” (1st PRESTDEN)

RAJINDER SINGH JI –“Where there is love, there is no anger. Where there is love, there is no lust. Where there is love, there is no greed. Where there is love, there is no attachment. And where there is love, there is no ego.”

RALPH CHARELL –“It is thought cooperation and consultation that conflicts can be resolved with success.”

RALPH CRAW SHAW –“Travel has a way of stretching the mind. The stretch comes not from travel’s immediate rewards, the inevitable myriad new sights, smells and sounds, but with experiencing first-hand how others do differently what we believed to be the right and only way.”

RALPH ELLISON –“When I discover who I am, I’ll be free.”

RALPH MARSTON –“Don’t lower your expectations to meet your performance. Raise your level of performance to meet your expectations. Expect the best of yourself, and then do what is necessary to make it a reality.”

RALPH T FLEWELLING –“We cannot impose our will on nature unless we first ascertain what her will is. Working without regard to law brings nothing but failure; working with law enables us to do what seemed at first impossible.”

RALPH W SOCKMAN –“The test of courage comes when we are in the minority. The test of tolerance comes when we are in the majority.”

RALPH W. EMERSON –“What lies behind us and what lies ahead of us are tiny matters compared to what lives within us.”

RAM CHANDRA –“The hard and fast rules of life and tiring practices prescribed by teachers for realization have really made matters so complicated that people are led to believe it to be beyond their power and capacity… Iron will to achieve the goal together with proper means and guidance is the only thing required for complete success.”

RAM DAS –“Ramdas from his own experience can boldly assert that there is God. Until you yourself get the experience, it is natural that you should deny Him. But a time will come when you too will have faith in Him.”

RAM DAS –“The only way to control the mind and free it from the evils you mention is always to take the Name of God, meditate upon His great attributes and surrender all your actions to Him.”

RAM DASS –“The game is not about becoming somebody, it’s about becoming nobody.”

RAM DASS –“You may have expected that enlightenment would come Zap! Instantaneous and permanent. This is unlikely. After the first ah-ha experience, it can be thought of as the thinning of a layer of clouds…”

RAM DOSS –“The spiritual journey is individual, highly personal. It can’t be organized or regulated. It isn’t true that everybody should follow one path. Listen to your own truth.”

RAM KRISHAN PARAMHANSA-“If you must be made, be it not for the things of the world.”

RAM KRISHAN PARAMHANSA-“It a thorn has entered your feet, get another thorn to take out the first, then the row away the second.”

RAM V CHANDRAN –“The role of ego in worldly life differs from its role in spiritual life. Ego means self-esteem, pride, vanity etc. To lead a successful worldly life, self-esteem is a positive virtue, but vanity is a negative quality for spiritual practice, ego is the barrier and should be crushed.”

RAMA DAS –“First a person should learn to lead a life of righteousness, discharge one’s duties to self and neighbours and then think of the other (spiritual) side of life. One who strives to establish Dharma is alone a godly person.”

RAMCHANDRA GANDHI –“Only when we misconstrue nothingness as a limitless something, and misconstrue ourselves as limited things, Buddha says, does nothingness appear to us as a devouring, annihilatory, malevolence. Nihilism and egotism preached by Keshakambalin and Goshala are merely caricatures of Nirvana and self-realisation… A rediscovery of pauranika wisdom in general may close the gap between life and thought, aboriginality and advaita (so that) the embrace of Guha and Rama becomes visible and intelligible and irresistible again… “
