Now that we’re at the end of the year, it’s a great time to plan your publicity for 2008.
With all the talk about the immediacy of a story, and the unbelievable speed that news pieces make it onto TV and radio, we often forget that for most media, lead times are crucial. Lead times can vary from a day to six months depending on the media you’re pitching. Generally women’s magazines have the longest lead times, sometimes as much as four to six months.
If you want to find out what magazine lead times are, call their advertising department and get a copy of their media kit. This will not only tell you when advertising deadlines are (signaling your submission cut-off) but it will also show you what stories to pitch when. Generally magazines will try and coordinate advertising to coincide with their themes, so if you have a story about the benefits of yoga, you might want to dig through the advertising calendar and see if they’re planning to address it in a future issue.
Once you define your publicity targets and get an idea of what to pitch when, you’ll want to open up a calendar and start circling dates that will matter to your story. Get creative with this! Often dates are overlooked because they may seem too small (like peanut butter and jelly day) but everyone’s competing for the biggies: Valentine’s Day, Christmas, etc. so why not add some off-beat holidays to your pitching calendar and see what happens? If you’re looking for every holiday under the sun (including international ones) try downloading the Calgoo calendar – this is a free program used to sync Outlook with your Google calendar – but an additional benefit of it is that it comes loaded with every imaginable holiday. A great tool to start your planning session!
Once you define holidays/seasons/events you want to pitch your story to, you’ll also want to be cognizant of the appropriate seasons and what the media is looking for. Here’s a brief outline of all four seasons as well as suggested targets/pitches. Keep in mind that breaking news stories and global events may slant these times considerably, but barring that, the seasonal angles tend to remain fairly consistent.
January – March
The first season of the year is pretty quiet. The holidays are over and much of the media is looking ahead and looking to summer with getting fit and weight loss stories, as well as New Year’s resolutions, getting organized and of course – the looming tax season. This is a very “anything goes” time of year, so if you weren’t able to sell fluff pieces during the holidays, you might want to try and repitch them now.
April – June
With major companies releasing their first quarter earnings (and hogging all the news space) this could be a tough time to get in. As April 15th looms out there you’ll see a lot of stories addressing taxes, saving on taxes, and everything financial, but once that date comes and goes the media will start looking ahead to summer stories and “spring fever” pieces.
July – September
With summer in full swing we’ll see a lot of lighter business stories, celebrity stories, trend pieces, and back to school. This is a fantastic time to pitch since many pr firms and media folk are on vacation. They still need stories but have less people pitching and less folks to field those pitches so if you can get your story in and it needs very little work you could be a shoe-in to get some coverage.
October – December
Many pr people think that this is the heaviest time of the year, but I tend to disagree. I think that the media is hungry for anything related to the holidays, end of year perspective, getting your life in order, New Year’s resolutions (yet again) as well as the next year’s prediction stories, etc. You’ll also see a lot of best and worst of for the prior year. Relationship experts – now is your time to shine! With all the family gatherings there’s a big call for getting along, making family relationships better/stronger as well as navigating the busy holiday season and still keeping your sanity.
Keep in mind that while we’ve only addressed media, these rules apply to online media as well as events you might do. It’s much easier to get someone interested in something they’re already interested in, and by coordinating your efforts, you’ll have a much stronger and focused campaign. Planning your media for the upcoming year is one of the best things you can do before the clock strikes midnight on December 31st. It’ll not only keep your campaign fresh but also tightly focused. With a plan in place, you’ll be ready to hit the ground running after January 1!
Wishing you a super-successful New Year!

Between 1978 and 1996 Charlotte MacLeod published ten Peter Shandy novels, all of them wild, wacky and witty. Her characters range from the straight laced to the totally demented. Her plots are frequently laugh out loud funny. If you like unconventional mysteries that are well written I suggest that you try this series.

In the first book “Rest you Merry” we meet Peter Shandy, a professor at Balaclava Agricultural College and co-propagator of the Balaclava Buster rutabaga. It is Christmas time which means that it is time for the college’s main fund raising event, The Grand Illumination. For years Peter’s neighbor Jemima Ames has badgered him to decorate his house on the crescent. This year he decides he has had enough. After all but burying his house under gaudy decorations he escapes Balaclava for a sea trip only to be shipwrecked. Slinking back home to face his irate neighbors he finds Jemima’s body behind his couch. Is it an accident or murder? Thorkjeld Svenson, college president, champion of the straight furrow and berserker Viking, assigns Peter to find out, without ruining the illumination.

The second book is “The Luck Runs Out”. Strange things are happening in Balaclava County. First some prankster turns all the horse shoes nailed up in the college barns upside down, letting the luck run out, figuratively speaking. Second, the silversmith’s vault is emptied in a daring robbery while the newly married Peter and Helen Shandy just happen to be there picking out their silverware. Third, Belinda of Balaclava, the college’s prize sow is pignapped and the local farrier is found dead in the sty’s mash feeder. Peter is once again assigned to sort out the mysteries.

Third is “Wrack and Rune”. Professor Timothy Ames is visiting the Horsefalls farm in Lumpkin Corners when their hired man dies in a very nasty way. After calling the police and doctor, his next call is to Peter Shandy. Now Peter must find out why someone has been harassing the Horsefalls. Is the death another prank that has gone wrong or cold blooded murder? How does the old Viking rune-stone on the property fit into the mystery? To find the answers, Peter must deal with pranksters, large crowds of sightseers, and the college president’s 102 year old uncle Sven’s pursuit of an older woman.

Number four on the list is “Something the Cat Dragged In”. Retired professor Ungley rents Mrs. Lomax’s downstairs apartment. When her cat Edmund shows up with his hairpiece in his mouth, her only thought is to return it before the professor misses it. When she finds him not home and his bed not slept in she goes looking for him and finds him impaled on a harrow peg behind the Balaclava Society’s clubhouse. Police Chief Ottermole calls the death an accident but Mrs. Lomax doesn’t believe it and when Edmund finds another clue it leads straight back to the college. Overnight Balaclava County is the scene of a power struggle between town and gown that could destroy Balaclava Agricultural College. Naturally President Svenson assigns Peter Shandy, the Hercule Poirot of the turnip fields, the job of uncovering the murderer.

“The Curse of the Giant Hogweed” is the fifth book in the series. In this book Professors Shandy, Ames, and Stott have traveled to England to assist with the problems being caused by the growth of giant hogweed. When they set out to do field work they cross the border into Wales and find a world they didn’t expect. Trapped in the hogweed and confronted by a giant looking for the King’s pet griffin, it doesn’t take them long to realize that life has become even more bizarre then usual.

Number six is “The Corpse in Oozak’s Pond”. It’s Ground Hog day and all of Balaclava has turned out to see if the College ground hog will see his shadow. They get more of a show then they expect when a corpse pops up through the ice on the pond. When two more deaths follow, it’s up to Peter to find some answers.

In the seventh book, Vane Pursuit, Peter’s wife Helen is photographing antique weather vanes for the historical society. It seems like no sooner does she her pictures then the weather vanes come up missing. When someone fire bombs the Lumpkin soap factory shortly after their weather vane is photographed and someone dies in the fire Peter starts to investigate. Before he finds the answers he will tangle with a motley group of survivalists, assist a heiress who’s hiding out, and fear for the life of his beloved Helen.

Eighth in the series is An Owl Too Many. When Emory Emmerick, a site engineer for the college’s new TV station gets stabbed to death during the annual owl count Peter Shandy is once again on the case. A dead man who isn’t who he said he was, a secretary who keeps getting herself tied to trees, and a wild ride down a raging river in a tug boat make this a rollicking adventure as well as a good mystery.

Number nine is Something in the Water. Peter has gone to check out reports of beautiful, lush, lupines growing where they shouldn’t be able to grow at all. Staying in an old inn, he is waiting for his desert when the town’s most disliked citizen keels over face first into his diner. Foul play is suspected but Peter is much more interested in the lupines. Interested or not Peter soon finds himself trying to solve three mysteries. Who killed Jaspar Flodge, how are such lush plants growing in such poor soil, and who is the unknown artist who refuses to admit to painting such beautiful canvasses.

Number ten, the last but not least in the series is Exit the Milkman. Professor Feldster, Balaclava’s dairy expert and the Shandy’s neighbor has disappeared. Last seen on his way to one of his many lodge meetings he is seen getting into a big car with tinted windows and then nothing. He never shows up at the lodge, doesn’t come home and doesn’t show up for his morning class. Before he is found his obnoxious wife dies in a bizarre manor. Once again Peter must leave his turnip fields and classroom to play Sherlock Holmes.

In this article you will learn the importance of knowing your customers name and the positive impact that it has when conducting business.

Whether you greet your customers personally or on the phone it’s always a good idea to know them by their name.

If you don’t know their name, simply ask them. You may say in response, “that’s a lovely name!” or “How do you spell that so that I can remember it?”

There is a big difference between saying “oh you”, “hello sir”, “hello madam” compared to “hi Jack” or “hi Jane, how are you?” There is something very special about being referred to by your name. Your customer will know that you are addressing them and them only.

This is a very powerful communicational marketing tool that you can use with your customers at all times.

When we send out Christmas cards to our customers we always make sure that we include our customer’s name and that we spell it correctly. We also include leaflets on any current promotions that we are doing and guaranteed we get a good customer response rate.

So always spell your customer’s name correctly. Ask your customer how they spell their name, check it with them and spell it correctly every time. On your customers invoices, Christmas cards, birthday cards, promotional materials, or whatever it may be. Get this right and you will be pleasantly surprised by the impact it has.

I have mixed emotions about this book. I enjoyed it a lot, much of the action takes place at the hight of the Cold War which is a period of history that I have a big interest in, the writing quality is superb, the author clearly knows his profession, and how to utilize the written word for maximum effect. The writing style reminded me a great deal of one of my favorite Cold War authors, John LeCarre. So why do I have these mixed emotions?
I have given this some serious thought over the past few days, and I think I have found the source of my troubles. It stems from the duality of the plot lines. Bear Any Burden is part a family history, and part a Cold War thriller. The flip flopping between the action and the historical component is an oft used tool in a writer’s toolbox. Usually though it is easy to segregate the active plot from the passive historical contextual plot. That is not the case with Bear Any Burden, both plots are active.
Although there is a strong connection between the Cold War side of the book and the historical family story, I personally feel that more could have been written about the Cold War plot, and the family history written in a more passive voice. Oh my goodness, I sound like an English Literature teacher, and that is something I vowed I would not do. I had enough of those kinds of lessons at the English Grammar School I attended a hundred years ago!
So, let’s move on to the plot itself, it is 1983 and the Cold War is at its peak, the main character is Sir Alex Campbell, the head of an international drinks company. His plan is to import Vodka from Poland a commodity that he feels will further his companies global reach. Sir Alex also occasionally helps out his friends in the Secret Service, delivering little packages for them while traveling on business, something he does a great deal of. He is not surprised when he is approached to make a small delivery while in Poland. The mission is simple, he will use a carry on bag supplied to him, it will have a false bottom that contains some money and two passports. The passports and money are to assist a Polish scientist and his wife to defect to the west.
Sir Alex is to wait at his hotel and someone will knock on his door, they will have an identical bag, and they will trade. Nothing could be simpler, and certainly does not seem to involve much danger, the only potential issue will be the customs check. But Sir Alex is such a frequent traveler and so well known it is unlikely that he will receive more than a cursory check by the authorities.
Indeed the border presents no problem, Sir Alex sails through using his distinguished aplomb. His problems start to spiral out of control at the hotel though. Sir Alex needs to make a huge decision, to turn and run, or pay any price and bear any burden. He can run to safety, no one knows of his involvement, and he will be long gone by the time any even tenuous link to him can be made. Or should he stay and become a part of what almost certainly will be a life or death struggle?
I doubt I am writing a spoiler of the plot to reveal that his decision is to stay and try to help the nuclear scientist and his wife find their way to freedom. Part action thriller, and part exploration of his past, Sir Alex must face his personal demons, both old and new.
This is a book that deserves to receive some attention, the quality of writing can not be questioned. If you know someone that enjoys a good spy story give them a copy for Christmas, I know that they will love it.
You can pick up your copy of Bear Any Burden from Amazon.

The medical term known as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) came to the forefront following the Vietnam conflict. Soldiers returned home mentally scarred by the ravages of war. Lives were forever changed. PTSD is nothing new, and certainly has been around since man started to have their first battles, but has only recently been recognized as a distinctive problem.
Bedlam South is a interesting novel that takes a look at the American Civil War as seen through the eyes of two confederate soldiers, and brothers, and a doctor who works with the mentally insane. But are these patients insane or merely pawns in the game of war?
I am always curious about novels with two authors, sometimes they work, sometimes they don’t. I for one could not possibly conceive of writing a novel with someone else, my ego is too big, and a novel is an intensely personal thing. A little bit of research reveals that these two authors have been friends for many years. They are both new to the authoring business, but one of them may have got some guidance from his older brother. Yes, Mark Grisham is John Grisham’s brother. Digging further we find that Mark is a bit of a history fan, particularly the Civil War era, while David has been interested in Psychology and mental health for many years.
What is interesting is that these two authors have managed to keep a consistent voice and style throughout Bedlam South, yet clearly it is possible to see which of them inspired a particular sub plot.
Two brothers, the battle seasoned Billy, and his younger brother Zeke stand shoulder to shoulder on the battlefield fighting for the confederate army. Split up in a devastating battle with the Northern forces they spend the rest of the war not knowing if each other is alive, but somehow trying to force the horrors of war and the potential results from their mind.
Dr. Joseph Bryarly meanwhile is running a mental asylum in England, the call to arms comes, and somewhat reluctantly returns to the America to head up Wingate Asylum in Richmond, Virginia, a facility for the mentally insane and war criminals.
Today the concept of such a place is abhorrent, but in the 1860’s this was not an unusual arrangement, and certainly Russia did very similar things up until the 1970’s. The term therapy has to be very loosely interpreted to use it in the context of ‘helping’ patients.
The mid 1800’s saw some very unique treatments, most of which called into question the sanity of the staff rather than the patients. Dr. Bryarly is not without his own demons, and as the war progresses he becomes more and more disconnected with reality, seeking solace in drink and drugs. The horrors of his past matched with the horrors of the present seem to overwhelm him. Can he survive? Or maybe more importantly does he have the will to survive?
I enjoyed Bedlam South, it is well written and well researched, however I still have some questions about the effectiveness of having joint authors. The book is really two mostly unrelated stories that the reader must wait until the final pages to understand how they relate. I think that had the two stories intertwined in a more significant way in the early part of the book it would have made for a better end result.
I still enjoyed it, and if you have someone on your Christmas gift list that enjoys historical novels of the Civil War era, this one is a must have. You can order your copy from the authors’ web site.

In His Own Time is a work of non fiction and explores the remarkable story of Rhonda “Faye” Baker. A gifted athlete, from a family of gifted athletes, who in October 2000 experienced a life changing event, and one that I would wish on no one. While on a church excursion the 12 passenger van she was traveling in experienced a rear tire blowout causing the van to roll over three times before coming to a stop upside down in a ditch next to the I-95. Most of the passengers escaped with cuts and bruises, alas Faye was not so lucky.
Faye was severely hurt and had to be airlifted to a nearby hospital. The prognosis was grim, the barely conscious woman was told by some realistic, but in my mind rather cold doctors “You have a broken neck, and you will never walk again”. Note the use of the phrase ‘will never’ rather than ‘may never’. This is hardly the kind of news that anyone would want to hear.
Faye Baker though is no quitter, and In His Own Time reveals just how powerful this woman’s will to succeed is. She was 37 at the time of the accident, a lady in her prime, an up and coming basketball coach, and to the girls on her team, the lady Tigers of the Bradwell Institute in Georgia, she was a true role model.
Author Tamara Pray Frazier is a close friend of Faye and leads us through the long and frustrating battle to regain some mobility. Things that we take for granted, tying a shoelace or putting on a sock are suddenly daunting tasks. To go from able bodied healthy woman to being as helpless as a new born child would break all but the strongest wills. Faye did not waver, her faith in God, and other people’s faith in her, somehow helped overcome what seemed insurmountable problems.
No, she will never again play basketball or run in a marathon, but, through sheer grit and determination, and maybe a smattering of good luck, she has regained mobility. Against all of the odds and the medical prognosis she can walk with the assistance of two canes. Better still, she is once more an active coach in the basketball arena. Faye will likely never recover the fine motor skills she had, and that is something I can understand more than most, following a stroke last year.
I admire Faye, and I admire Tamara Pray Frazier for having the courage to tell this story. As a reviewer I found myself torn as to how to approach this book. I think it would be fair to say that the author has had little writing experience and that minimalist editing was applied, resulting in a work that is somewhat choppy. The critic in me feels that rather than using a constant ‘voice’, she allows the voice to wander. The book reader in me has a different sentiment, it says that this is a compelling story, and one that I am glad these ladies have opted to share with the world.
It is Christmas Eve, and as I sit on my front porch, (well it is 70 degrees, and type out this review), I can honestly say that this was the perfect book to read today. Christmas is a time of giving. This is a story that gives, it gives hope, it gives faith, and above all it gives thanks.

Oops, it wasn’t until I had had read almost the entire book that I discovered that this was fiction and not biographical! This story is so well constructed it is impossible to tell fact from fiction. The characters are life-like, and they are crafted with a skill and panache that one rarely finds in a novel. I was devastated when I discovered it was a novel, I really wanted to ask Kurt Kamm about that time on the mountain with the fire all around!
Having made my confession, let us talk about the story. The title One Foot In The Black is a reference to fighting Wildfires, more importantly the placement of firefighters, they are in the just scorched area dealing with the fire at close range. It is to say the least a dangerous place to be. If the wind changes, you are in big trouble, but the science and experience shows that you at least have a possible escape route.
Author Kurt Kamm takes us on an odyssey of discovery, a discovery of what it is like to be on the fire line, and a look at what drives the people who risk their lives so that we still have possessions after the fire has tried to rip through our property. Maybe most important of all, we get to peek inside the mind of one young man that has decided to make this his career.
The style that Kamm has adopted is an interesting one, and one that essentially permits two very different stories to be told side by side. We have the story of 19 year old Greg Kowalski entering the field of wildfire fighting, and we have the rather dark and sad story of Greg’s upbringing. Living in a dysfunctional family with a verbal and physically abusive father Greg can think of little more than how to escape. The opportunity arises when he attends his father’s ‘office’ Christmas party. The abusive elder Kowalski is also a fire fighter, and it is the station chief that offers Greg the opportunity to move to California and become a seasonal member of the CDF.
This is an opportunity that Greg cannot turn down, escape from Saginaw and the oppressive regime that his father has created. Of course there are downsides, what will happen to his mother and sister, who will still be under the ogre’s spell.
What Greg lacked in Saginaw, he finds in California, a father figure he can admire, a father figure that offers genuine friendship and leadership. Fighting wildfires is a dangerous occupation, as Greg discovers first hand, caught by surprise with a wind direction Greg faces a life or death situation. To save himself, or risk near certain death to try and save his friend and mentor?
I think it would be inappropriate to reveal more, I have a sadistic streak! You will just have to read One Foot In The Black yourself to find out what happens!
I really like the meticulous attention to detail that Kurt Kamm has included. And clearly the detail is factual, his book has been endorsed by several fire fighting organizations. Kurt Kamm lives in Southern California and has had some first hand experience with wild fires, apparently one actually made it to the front door of his Malibu home.
You can find out more about this author from his web site, and One Foot In The Black is available from Amazon.

“Do you know your customers voice?”

In this article you will learn the importance of knowing your customers voice and the positive impact that it has when conducting business.

Whether you greet your customers personally or on the phone it’s always a good idea to know them by their voice.

If you don’t know their voice, simply ask them politely who they are and get used to their voice. Try and notice some key aspects to help you remember. Such as; the way they may pronounce certain words, their accent, their voice tone, their voice pitch etc.

Don’t you just love it when people recognise your voice? And say “hey Ken, or hi Susan, how you doing today?”

Learn to recognise your customer’s voice and greet them by name, especially when they are on the phone.

This is a very powerful communicational marketing tool that you can use with your customers time and time again.

However, this technique does come with a warning. Only use this form of interaction if you are 100% sure of your customer’s voice. Do not guess as this will have an adverse affect, It could leave your customer feeling a little bit distant from you and your business.

So if you have customers, who are regulars and you do know their voice, refer to them by name and make them feel special.

Try this it really is effective and works well.

2008 was a rich year for really great books. Most of you that know me know that I refuse point blank to step into a Book Store, the books found inside such dens of iniquity are either over edited, under achieving New York Times Bestsellers or their fellow siblings from the giant Wal-Mart publishing houses. I prefer to seek out more satisfying fare. I am not sure how many books I read in 2008, but I will guarantee it’s at least 100 more than the average reader!
I am not sure that I have a favorite book for the year, but I certainly have a favorite author, so good were his books that I am going to recommend all three. Last spring I was invited to review Prophecy by Paul Mark Tag. It was a great read, a thriller with just a hint of Sci Fi. What would happen if ESP was found to be a genetic trait? A little twist in part of our DNA. Would a government view this as a potential weapon? Could this gene be a way to create the ultimate fighting force? I am not usually a fan of Sci Fi themes, but Paul Mark Tag hovers in that gray area where science fact meets science fiction. I found the book irresistible.
Following an interview with him he asked if I would be interested in reading his first book Category 5, a weather related thriller, once again a book that plays on the very edge of established science. This book was superbly crafted, it grabbed you on page one and held you in its grasp till he hit the back cover. The bad guys were pure evil, the heroes, heroic, a classic thriller, score two for Paul Mark Tag.
Late Summer he contacted me once again, would I be interested in his soon to be released book The Errant Ricochet. I said ‘of course’. But, he warned me, this is not like Cat 5 or Prophecy, this is a collection of short stories, most of which were written a while ago. It transpired that short stories were the medium Paul used to hone his craft. Quite frankly he could have told me that the title was ‘How To Avoid Diaper Rash’ and I would still have read it, I really like this author’s style of writing.
The Errant Ricochet had one failing, it was too damn short! The stories are wonderful. In the early 70’s children’s author Roal Dahl produced a series of adult short stories, which formed the basis for a very successful TV series ‘Tales Of The Unexpected’. The stories themselves were compact in construction, yet deep in plot, and each one had a sting in its tail. This sums up The Errant Ricochet very well. If I ever have the opportunity to teach a short story writing class, The Errant Ricochet would be on my must read list.
The rest of my picks are not in any order of significance, I have however tried to keep them in the order that I read them. They are all splendid, and every one is an award winner in my eyes. I read because I enjoy it, and these authors represent the best of the best!
My favorite Non Fiction writing team is Terry Turchie and Kathleen Puckett, two ex FBI wheels who wrote the wonderful book ‘Hunting The American Terrorist’ in 2007, a book whose timing was maybe not quite right. It hit the market right when a whole plethora of books on terrorism were published, and did not get the publicity that it richly deserved. Their new collaboration is Homeland Insecurity. This takes a long hard look at how the political machine, and some of Capitol Hill’s household names have taken advantage of homeland security to further their political ends, rather than the security of our borders. My good friend Don Bracken of History Publishing Company permitted me to take a sneak peek a couple of months prior to release. This meant I had to sit on my review for weeks! Hardest darn thing I think I have ever done! This book should be read by anyone who has an interest in the American political system.
Those of you that know me also know that when I am not buried in a book I am likely listening to music. I have not counted, but I would be willing to bet that I wrote over 250 reviews in 2008. My favorite musical period being the 1970’s and the rise and fall of progressive rock. One of my musical contacts sent me a CD by Ken Hensley, Ken was one of the forces behind the 70’s prog band Uriah Heep. Although they did not reach the prominence of Yes or ELP, they were certainly a force to be reckoned with. The CD Blood On The Highway was very well done, and it did not take a great deal of brain power to work out that it was a biographical work that covered Ken’s life then and now.
When I mentioned this to Ken’s PR guy in the US he said, “If you like it, you should read his book also called ‘Blood On The Highway’. I did. I liked it. This is a wonderfully personal adventure that chronicles Ken’s life. Everything you have ever heard about super stars and excess are true. They had it all, but was it really theirs? What happens when the Rolls Royce’s are gone? What happens when your name is no longer on the billboard and the spot lights dim? You enter the long middle age of the fading star. The stages are much like those that face an alcoholic or drug addict, there is denial. In the case of many rock stars this takes the form of touring constantly, but bit by bit you realize that the venues are smaller, the crowds are smaller, the glitter is gone.
Over the past couple of years I have interviewed well over a dozen superstars from the 70’s and the story remains fairly constant. Blood On The Highway was my first opportunity to really understand the process. It is also rich in photography, any music lover would covet this book in their collection.
Sometimes I don’t want to wrap my head around a complex book. One with seemingly hundreds of characters and so many interwoven sub plots that you need a note book to keep track of what is going on. Sometimes I just want to read a ‘feel good’ book, enter Dean Whitney and his delightful yarn Pinch Hitter. A forty something middle manager for a mega mart has long dreamed of playing baseball as a pro, but his aspirations were destroyed with a life altering accident on the baseball field when at age 16 his brother was seriously hurt by an accidental hit. His love for the game has not diminished, neither has his natural ability at bat, but now his at bats are confined to the pay as you go Batting Cages. Through a strange set of circumstances, his life may be forever changed. I personally do not like baseball, I can not see the attraction in it, but I can see the attraction in Pinch Hitter, if you have a base ball fan in your family, pick them up a copy, it is a fun little read.
A much more serious and thought provoking work is Paul Miller with A Place To Belong. Paul has wanted to write this book for 40 years, but could not bring himself to commit pen to paper. The memories being so traumatic to both him and his family all that could result would be the opening of old wounds. I am really glad that Paul found the courage to write A Place To Belong. It involves an unhappy and abusive childhood, and much time spent learning to survive on the streets, while kids of his age should have a warm and loving home environment. Somehow Paul made it. I spent more than 6 years working with the homeless in Calgary, the street is a lonely and unforgiving place. If you have an at risk teenager, they need to read A Place To Belong.
Everyone needs a little humor in their life, and when it comes to humor books in 2008 the one that stands head and shoulders above the rest is Bill Seaton with his wonder book My Seven Years In Captivity. This charming tale concerns Bill’s time as head of the San Diego Zoo Public Relations department. The San Diego Zoo was one of my favorite haunts when my children were young, and knowing the layout of the place, and the often quirky animals, I laughed till I could not laugh any more!
Bill really manages to capture the humor in situations that I am sure were anything but funny when they occurred.
Occasionally I dip into the realm of Historical Fiction, this tends to be a bit of a hit and miss affair. Credibility forces the author into a set of circumstances that are well documented, the fiction must be woven into the fabric of the existing circumstances. Sometimes it works well, most times it does not, either the story line is too far from the actual events to be believable, or the factual events are bent, again causing a credibility gap. That is not the case with El Tigre by John Manhold. He has created a wonderful work of fiction that weaves in and out of the facts in a seamless fashion. Our hero is Johann Heinrich von Manfred a young man born of Prussian aristocracy who finds himself without friends or safe haven who moves to the New World and becomes embroiled with the establishment of the Republic Of Texas. History buffs, and folks that enjoy a good yarn will love El Tigre.
My final pick for the year is Unholy Domain by Dan Ronco. I mentioned early on that I am not much of a Sci Fi lover, but this one stands out. Maybe it is because the Internet is the life blood of what I do, or maybe it is because the plot line contains themes that we are already acutely aware of. Could terrorists create havoc by using the Internet? Not to send Spam, but to take control of parts of our infrastructure? Power Plants, Telecommunications, Transportation, the list of vulnerabilities goes on and on. Already the world has become dependent on a small number of technology companies, Microsoft, Cisco, Intel, to name but three, what would happen if one of them deliberately installed some kind of virus?
Unholy Domain is set in the very near future, so the technology is most definitely science fact, the company that he uses is science fiction, but the plot line is haunting. For the Sci Fi fan on your Christmas list, you can not go wrong with this book.
My great books of 2008 list could go on and on. But I think I should stop here, either that or I should find my own publisher and write a book about books! It has been a great year for great books. if your book did not get a mention, it is not because I did not like it, it is because I am out of space on this column. 2008 was also the year when I can honestly say I did not read one single ’stinker’, usually I get conned into one or two books that should never have seen the light of day. Oops, I am wrong, there was one, I can’t remember the author’s name, or the title, but it concerned the JFK conspiracy, as I recall it involved clones and body doubles, trap doors in the open topped limo JFK was riding in, and there was some tie in with the supposed UFO that crashed at Roswell, New Mexico. I would go find the title of it, but I keep those books in a special dark corner, and even I am scared to go near it!
Have a great year everyone, and make a resolution for 2009, feed your brain, read some books.

Over the last years the number of globalization books has increased steadily. What is globalization? is the question being asked frequently. Some think at first of the economic globalization or the business globalization. Others have a more political view; others think Internet first and so on. So, what is globalization? Globalization books will give you an answer, but only the answers the writer would express and come up with. Economic globalization as well as business globalization is mostly referred to, but with the Internet having emerged to be present nearly everywhere the communication aspect is the one driving everything. Communication has strong impact on the businesses and the economies – no doubt; but as communication can be seen as democracy on the Internet anyone who wants to get attention, needs to get customers and clients, followers and or simply interactions for any purpose has to start campaigning. It is like a campaign that never ends; hence it is largely about marketing in cyberspace.

Recent books on the subject of globalization and marketing start from Thomas Friedman’s “The World is Flat” and “Hot, Flat and Crowded”, Seth Godin’s “Tribes” and Chris Anderson’s “The Long Tail” to understand Google better. Of course there are some other globalization books published. One of the best selling book on Amazon Kindle in this category is “8W8 – Global Space Tribes” by Ralf Hirt. It actually is fiction, but could be seen as a visionary manual to both globalization and marketing for the 21st century. The interesting thing is that it has no opinion. It is about an Internet think-tank that develops a world modeling engine that enables the participant to visualize and understand all aspects of the world both digital and offline combined. What is globalization? Readers would find the answers here if anyone can answer this question at all. The best is probably to read all these books, if time allows. Time might be one of the most important game changers in the age of globalization. Developments are certainly speeding up and the journey of globalization will be a volatile one upwards long-term.
